Evaluation- 4th June

 

The theme for my project is based around the idea of looking at distortion and is centred around the title “The Warped Ordinary”. I wanted to investigate distortion in a variety of different ways, by working with a variety of medias; focusing in on different subjects. I began to immediately gather my research together, as I became more engrossed in my practise and the final outcome of the last unit.

I feel that the most appropriate form of research for myself is to take photos, as it helps me to stimulate my ideas and grow on the foundations, which I originally set down. I decided to take a variety of images, which were experimental and I feel that this encouraged me to think more about why the running theme of distortion is important to me, when it’s linked to identity. I like the idea that a photo can ‘speak a thousand words’, yet it doesn’t necessarily represent truth and can often be deceiving. Furthermore, I have always been intrigued by portraits of people, as I feel that you can really get to know a person, just by looking into their eyes, which in itself creates a sense of intimacy.

Thinking about distortion in literal terms, I wanted to embody a different style into my painting; a style that represents all of the images, which I have taken as part of my FMP, which express the movement, which I captured. In addition, I knew that my initial ideas would morph and form into something different, but I always made sure to keep the idea of “The Warped Ordinary” in my mind. I knew that it would be essential to research a variety of different artists to help me form a clarified vision of my final piece and so I looked at a wide variety of different artists such as Bryan Charnley, Elly Smallwood and Tomoko Sawada. Each artist inspired me in different ways and helped me to develop my research and to think more about what my final outcome would represent.

I mentioned in my proposal that I didn’t want my method of working to be solely based on painting, and I definitely followed through with that statement by stepping outside of my comfort zone. In the past, I have often shied away from working on a big scale, and the outcome never seemed to satisfy me, but despite these issues, I was determined to work on an unprecedented scale and create a piece, which would stand out because of its size. I have often painted self-portraits in the past and for my final piece, I wanted my painting to express a sense of openness; the size of the subject’s face, overshadowing the reality of it’s actual scale and creating something which not only feels overwhelming to myself but to everyone else. In conclusion, I am pleased with my final piece and I hope that other people are going to be interested in looking at it when it is displayed in the end of year exhibition. Furthermore, I feel that the end product signifies the start of what I set out to achieve and I am satisfied that I have fulfilled a piece which represents me as a painter. Not only that, but the Art and Design Foundation has helped me to improve the way in which I work but more importantly, it has helped me to become braver.

Preparing for exhibition- May 17th

In preparation for the exhibition, which will be showcasing all of our work, we have been getting the classroom in order. As you can see in the images below, we had to lift up boards and fix them into place, which took about two days to construct. We then went onto filling and sanding the walls before painting them.

Once we had just about sorted everything out, we then were able to start putting up our work and as you can see in the picture above, I have just arrived to college with my final piece and am unwrapping it.

Outdoor Shoot- 16th May

I recently decided to take some pictures of my good friend, who is a model, as I felt that i would be able to gain some valuable experience seeing as I haven’t had much chance to shoot people in the outdoors. I particularly like the visual look of sepia effects and photographs, which have a Polaroid- style effect to them and so, I decided I would try and echo the images below of Lana Del Rey ( a singer, who is often styled in classy 60s-inspired dresses, 70s style sweaters and skinny jeans.

As you can see, I have inserted images of the final outcome below and overall, I was pleased with the results and I would say that the top photo is my personal favourite. The images also tie- in with my theme of distortion; Ebony appears to be confused and startled amongst the blurred background, which instigates a sense of movement.

I like the fact that this image has a blurred effect to it; strongly reminds me of a photo from the 80’s at a festival. The greenery in the background with the subtle hints of purple are visually pleasing.

I like the fact that Ebony is looking away from the camera, the branch protruding from the bottom middle of the photo adds interest to the picture as a whole.

Bruce Gilden- 10th May

After thinking about the scale of my work and deciding to go for a large scale, the artist Bruce Gilden came to mind. As you can see in the images below, Gilden’s work is absolutely brilliant and powerful. I am so intrigued by Bruce Gilden’s images and for me personally, they bring about feelings of melancholy due to the fact that the people in the image look withered and unhappy; they aren’t necessarily conventionally attractive, however Bruce Gildon does state that his work is all about the idea of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. I strongly believe in this saying, which first appeared in the 3rd century BC in Greek. It didn’t appear in its current form in print until the 19th century, but in the meantime there were various written forms that expressed much the same thought. Furthermore, I like the fact that these images stick in my head due to the harsh colours and the piercing eyes, which make you feel as though you are being stared out.

The reason for Bruce Gilden coming to mind is due to the way he displays his work, as you can see he prints out his images really large, and I personally feel that this helps to bring out the character in each of the individuals. Furthermore, my Dad, who I will be painting onto an 8ft x 4ft board, has the same coloured skin tone to the people in the images below; red and textured and I have decided to use a variety of different tones to highlight the roughness of the skin.

As you can see, the photographs effectively go well together; creating a bold statement

I love the expression on this man’s face and the viens, which are running across the guys face get my attention and make me feel slightly uncomfortable.

This man looks to have been in some sort of fight; makes me feel curious to know more about who he is and what he did to get beaten so badly.

This lady’s bold eyes are striking, as though they are piercing into the back of my head when I look away and so I am forced to keep staring at her. I love how Bruce has really shown a sense of ageing in his images and he makes me think about what I might look like as I get older. 

 

Final Piece Update – 10th May

I have been continuing with my final Piece and as I mentioned in the last post, I have been making good progress. 

As you can see, the images above show my previous development, which continues to the images below. I feel that the tones to the painting are merging well together and I recently decided to add the colour green, which I personally think adds definition to the subject.

Throughout my work, I have been constantly thinking about the different Artists, which I have recently been studying such as Elly Smallwood, and I have been making sure that my work is in some ways conjunctive with their styles without echoing their work too much. Furthermore, I feel that it has been important for me to keep other Artist’s in mind as it encourages me to be more open with my palette and brush movements. 

As you can see in the image below, you may be able to see that there is are some lines from where the paint had ran down the board, which seems to add interest to the painting on a bigger scale.

I was also faced with the problem of the sun shining onto my board, however I think the image below works well as the light is only highlighting certain aspects of the painting, which I think creates a visually interesting photograph. Overall, I feel that this piece still has a long way to go before it reaches it’s completion, but I want to carry on with the direction, which I have so far taken.

Final Piece Update- 9th May

I am reaching the final stages of my piece, which is so far progressing well. I have been capturing each stage of my painting using my camera, which I may put together to create a time lapse, however I feel that there may be some problems as I didn’t take enough photos to create a long enough video. Due to the scale of my Final Piece, I have been unable to bring it to college and so I have been working from home quite a lot recently.

Along with working on my final piece, I have also been studying a variety of contemporary and past artists, as I want to continue developing my understanding of different methods of practice.

To conclude, I feel that I am managing my time efficiently and I feel that if I keep up the pace, everything will be completed by the deadline.

Artist Research-Vincent Van Gogh- 5th May

“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

I have recently been looking at the Artist called Vincent Van Gogh, who is thought to have been one of the greatest dutch artists after Rembrandt. I became intrigued by his work after seeing some of his famous pieces of work at the Tate in London. 
Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and color, highly influenced 20th century art. He struggled with mental illness, and remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life. Van Gogh died in France on July 29, 1890, at age 37, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As it states above, Van Gogh died in a tragic way, and I personally believe that his mental struggles had some sort of contribution to his popularity in today’s society.

I love the movement displayed in the painting above and the cool tones, bring about a feeling of calmness .

When I look at the image above, I immediately think of a warm breeze, due to the movement of the brush strokes in the painting, which have a strong sense of dynamism to them.

‘Sunflowers’

After doing some background research on the painting above, I learnt that Vincent painted a series of four sunflower paintings, which were intended to be used as a decoration for Gogh’s friend, who lived in the so called Yellow- House, where Gogh and Gauguin worked together between October and December 1888.
The dying flowers are built up with thick brushstrokes (impasto). The impasto evokes the texture of the seed-heads. Van Gogh produced a replica of this painting in January 1889, and perhaps another one later in the year. The various versions and replicas remain much debated among Van Gogh scholars.
